Chapter 15

Theodora

IT SEEMED SO EASY THAT when Brad had a difficult time controlling the axe, I had to laugh. A couple other dudes who were standing in the intermediate section looked over to see what we were up to. I quieted down, not wanting to make Brad uneasy. It wasn’t a good look for a girl to upstage her date. Even in this era of equality, I wasn’t comfortable showing him up. At least not at first.

“Let me try again,” Brad muttered.

He picked up the third axe, glancing over at Dylan. The huntsman looked suspiciously disinterested, glancing up at the stars and then down at the ground. I bit my lip, trying to be serious.

Brad tested the weight, bobbing the axe up and down in his left palm before transferring it to his right. He appeared uncertain as to which hand to throw it with. Dylan made a helpful suggestion to use the same hand he held a pencil with.

“Got it,” Brad said. To his credit, he didn’t seem bothered by his relative inexperience. Giving me a wide smile, he threw it far short of the mark, lobbing it harmlessly to the ground a few feet in front of the target.

Dylan winked at me, reaching for another set of axes. “Why don’t you come this way?” He gestured toward the intermediate throwing range.

I glanced at Brad to see whether he was still on board. This thing could go bad quickly if his pride was hurt. But I misjudged him. Instead of being concerned with his failure, he gave me an encouraging smile.

“I want to see what you can do,” he assured me.

We followed Dylan to the next series of targets, interrupting the two other dudes. There were three ranges side by side. We had one, the other pair had one, and the last was empty. There were a few serious looking men at the far end where the experts lived.

Brad touched my shoulder and pointed to them. “I bet you could give them a run for their money.”

“Let me beat these guys first,” I said, pointing a thumb at the intermediate players.

“You think you can beat us?” one of the guys asked in surprise.

“I think she can,” Brad asserted confidently.

“How much do you want to bet?” the stranger asked.

“Twenty bucks,” Brad offered.

“Deal.” The man held out his hand for a shake.

Brad took it, turning to me with an expectant grin. I laughed, hoping that I really was that good. Testing the axe briefly as I had seen Brad do, it felt like an extension of my hand. I could actually see it hitting the target in the distance, even though I had yet to release the handle.

Snapping it back, I let it fly, blade over handle, until it buried itself in the target, right near the center where the lines converged. I screamed with delight, clapping my hands and giving Brad a quick kiss. This was so much more fun than dinner and a movie.

“We’re coming for you.” Brad pointed to the experts, who were now paying attention.
